Rattan Bai

Rattan Bai was a beautiful and flawless actor and singer. She plays a crucial role in the history of Bollywood and music. Born on 15 July 1890 in the Deccan region of India in the family of professional entertainers, she received her lessons at young age. She had a sister named Dadasaheb Jayavant. Their mother was Neera Bai who was a temple singer from Sindhudurg belonging to the Gomantak Maratha community and a father belonging to the Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu caste who was a local government official from Thane. Rattan Bai used to write and compose songs and bhajans for movies. One of her famous bhajan was ‘Bharat ki Beti ka Bhajan Tere Poojan Ko Bhagwan Bana Man Mandir Alishaan’. In 1939, she debuted in her first and only Marathi film Swarajyachya Seemewar, as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's mother.
