Dipali Barthakur was a famous Indian singer, playback singer, and musician from Assam. On January 30, 1941, she was born in Nilomoni Tea Estate, Sonari, Sivasagar in Assam, India. Her father’s name is Bishwanath Borthakur, and her mother’s name is Chandrakanti Devi. She married Neel Pawan Barua, an eminent painter and Lalit Kala Akademi member. She contributed exceptionally to the enrichment of the culture of the state.

In 1958, she sang the song “Mor Bopai Lahori” on All India Radio (AIR) in Guwahati while studying in class nine. In 1959, she sang the song “Joubone Amoni Kore Chenaidhon” for the Assamese film “Lachit Borphukan.” She had lent her exquisite voice to several famous film songs, including ‘Sonor Kharu Nalage Muk,’ ‘Konmana Boroxire Sip,’ ‘Jundhone Junalite,’ O Bondhu Somai Amar Phale,’ and many others. She had mainly sung the songs in the Assamese language.

In 1969, she sang the song “Luito Nejabi Boi,” her last song. After that, her singing career was cut short due to chronic motor neuron disease. She lost her voice and was forced to use a wheelchair. Dipali Barthakur had been honored with many awards, including the Padma Shri Award for traditional and folk music. She received the Padma Shri Award for her contribution to the arts by the Government of India in 1998, Silipi Bota from the Government of Assam in 2010, and Adieu Handique Silpi Award by the Sadou Asom Lekhika Somaroh Samiti in 2012. She was also honored with the best singer award by Sangeet Natak Akademi at Dibrugarh when she was just 15.

The legendary singer Dipali Barthakur (also called the Nightingale of Assam) lived for seventy-seven years. On Friday afternoon, December 21, 2018, she died at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati, Assam. She was cremated at Nabagraha crematorium with full state honors.
