Naruddin Ahmed is a well-known Indian art director with many notable achievements. He was born in a small hamlet in Nalbari district's Sathikuchi village. He has worked for more than 37 years in the art industry. His astonishing work can be seen during the annual festival of Durga Pooja, a widely celebrated ritual in the eastern states of India. Ahmed is known for creating a unique 100 feet idol of Goddess Durga installed at the Bishnupur Puja Mandap. It was made entirely of bamboo, taking one month to build. Unfortunately, the idol got destroyed by a storm. But Ahmed and his team re-installed the idol in a record time of seven days. He earned the coveted title in the Guinness Book of Records and the Limca Book of Records for the tallest Maa Durga idol. Earlier, he was applauded for creating 55 feet idol of Lord Ganesh during the Durga Pooja festival.
Apart from being an artisan, he is also an art director and worked for many mobile theatres in Assam. He is very closely associated with the cultural industry of Assam. He has worked with almost all the mobile theatres of Assam and acted in a record of more than 5000 plays across the state. He has worked with mobile theatres like Indradhenu (1982-84), Kohinoor (1985-2009), Abahan (1989-2015), Bhagyadevi (1990, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004), Bordoisila (2001), Pragjyotish (2001), Jyotirupa (2002), Ashirbad (2007), Rajtilak (2008), and Rajashree (20019-10) for more than three decades. He has given some of the most well-received, commercially hit and tastefully done plays such as Macbeth, Titanic, Hamlet, Anarkali, SamudraManthan and so on.
Although he has distanced himself from mobile theatres now, he fondly reminisces working with eminent filmmakers Munin Baruah and Mahendra Borthakur. He feels sad to see that commercialization has destroyed the culture of mobile theatres. He has been art director for the Assamese film Kalsandhya which was released in the year 1997. The film was produced by AJ Films Entertainment World(post-production) and the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC). Ahmed is also a Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee.
