Khuda ki Basti, literally translated to “God’s Abode,” is considered the greatest serial in Pakistani Television. It was aired on PTV Home, once in 1969, and then again in 1974. It was based on the novel of the same name, Khuda Ki Basti, by Shaukat Siddique. The serial reached a phenomenal level of popularity and was called the “Mother of All Serials.” The story follows the lives of the poor people living in a slum in Karachi after the Independence of Pakistan. Razia Begum is a widow who belongs to a respectable family and lives with her three children. They are down on luck and due to the scarcity of jobs and money, the people have to resort to dangerous and illegal means to earn money for their survival.
Razia’s young son and his friends get involved in begging, stealing, slashing people’s tires, gambling, and doing anything that would get them a rupee or two. One by one, they all get arrested and beaten, and when they get out of jail, they go right back to finding ways to earn money. Neyaz, a scrap dealer who mainly deals with stolen goods, eyes Razia’s daughter Sultana and concocts a plan to marry Razia to get access to her daughter. He plots with a doctor to slowly poison his future wife and acquire all the insurance money when she dies. Razia slowly succumbs to her death and leaves her children in the care of Neyaz.
Sultana gets assaulted by Neyaz and some of his relatives, but manages to escape and ends up in the care of a social working organization called Falak Paima. The show deals with several social evils and taboo topics like theft, gambling, alcoholism, scams, sexual assault, prostitution, and murder. The audience gets to experience the horrors that poverty can bring to people and the well-handled manner of these sensitive topics are what raised its popularity both times that it was released. The first airing was so successful, that in 1974, Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto insisted on telecasting it again since there was no record of the original show. It was repeat telecasted in 1990.
