Kabuli Pulao tells the narrative of Haji Mushtaq, a kind man native to Lahore, and Barbeena, a needy Afghan girl. Haji Mushtaq, a 51-year-old Muslim Punjabi bachelor, has a quiet and uncomplicated life until he meets Barbeena. He travels to Mardan on a religious tour and meets her during his stay in a masjid when her brother urges him to protect her by marrying her since she is a widow, and her late husband's brother wants to marry her forcibly.

Despite all efforts to assist her, Haji Mushtaq marries Barbeena, while his childhood sweetheart Shamim, who has had a crush on him since has sacrificed everything for him and is awaiting his marriage. On the urging of his niece Ayesha, who refuses to attend her engagement without him, he returns to his residence with Barbeena. He arrives at his home, where he lives with his younger brother, Chaudhry Qayyum, and his family. He presents Barbeena as a maid ready to serve him in gratitude for his assistance with her brother's recovery. Barbeen becomes connected to Qayyum's sisters after a few days, and other family members learn to appreciate her as well as she takes care of the house.
