Urdu Writer Zafar Meraj

Zafar Meraj is a 54-year-old Pakistani writer and lyricist born on 11 October 1968 in Quetta. He belongs to the Mashwani House, and his father was Mohammad Meraj. Zafar studied at Helper Public School, and for intermediate, he went to Tameer-e-Nau Public College, Quetta. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Balochistan University of Engineering and Technology, Khuzadar, Pakistan. 

Since his academic days, he has been interested in writing. During his college days, he used to write short stories and columns in magazines and newspapers and participated in literary events. After that, he worked as a journalist for a short period of time and then, in 1991 he wrote his first long play ‘Amarbail’ for PTV channel. Zafar has writing proficiency in Urdu, Brahui, and Balochi language. He has an excellent record of writing and has written over 50 drama serials, telefilms, and plays for PTV and other private networks, including Aaj TV, Indus Geo Entertainment, ARY Digital, Hum TV, etc. 

Zafar’s main theme of writing is centered on highlighting the problems of the lower middle class. He has written several outstanding dramas and movies, such as Dumpukht – Aatish e Ishq (2016), Lashkara (2018), A Rented Child (2004), Sangat (2015), Murad (2003), I’m Locked (2007), etc. Some of his works have been widely appreciated by the audience and received many awards. For example, his movie Murad (2003), won the Best Writer award at the Indus Film Festival. Similarly, he won the PTV Prize for Best Writer for an independent play called ‘Kohzade’ (2006) and the Lux Style Awards for Best Drama Serial for Lyari Express (2007).

Zafar is also concerned about social issues, and in 2021, he started a social service series called Khanabadosh on the YouTube Channel Nashpati Prime. The series covers an array of social topics, such as value systems, prejudice, human rights, and life in general in each episode. He is also going to appear in a similar show called Banjara, which will be featured on his official YouTube channel.
