Mr Ms Local is a Tamil language TV show that aired on the channel Zee Tamil on 16 January 2020, on the occasion of Pongal, a Tamil harvest festival. The stage of Mr. Ms. Local was taken up by television actors and some foreigners. Six serial actors, Fareena, Puvi, Akshaya, Alagappan, Barada, and Divakar, were paired with six foreigners of the opposite gender. For the first part of the show, each pair was given a task of assimilating ingredients and all the things that are required to celebrate Pongal.
The pairs individually went on their paths to the nearby village to acquire them, like, rice, pot, ghee, other ingredients to make Pongal dish, sticks to set up the fire, sugarcane, and a cow. The teams visiting the nearby locals and helped them with their chores in return for the ingredients. They cleaned the front yard with water mixed with cow dung, made muggu, i.e., flower designs on the ground with rice flour, cleaned dishes, and other help they needed. After these, they decorated their cows with flowers, Kumkum (red turmeric powder), and turmeric powder. The second part of the show enlisted a set of games. Each couple was invited onto the stage arranged in an empty ground in the village, where the Pongal celebrations took place.
The serial actors have given their foreign partners a Tamil name, and they were called with that name throughout the games. Fareena’s partner is Siva Kumaran, Puvi’s partner is Kannamma, Akshaya’s partner is Raja, Alagappan’s partner is Lakshmi, Barada’s partner is Muthayya, and Divakar’s partner was Chelvi. Every pair entertained the audience with their dances and antics.
The tasks were; slowcycling: boys should slow cycle to the finish line with their partners sitting in the back; ringing the bell: one of the partners should lift the other and run to the other end of the line to ring the bell; Pongal: the defining ritual of the Pongal festival is the making of the Pongal dish and the boiling of milk. A clay pot filled with milk is placed on a conventional fire made from sticks and is boiled till the milk overflows. This ritual is believed to symbolise a happy future. The task is to see whose pot over flows first; coconut: the pair that drinks the maximum number of coconuts wins.
