Azhaganum Arunagiriyum is a Tamil language TV show that airs on the channel Makkal TV every day at 6 am for half an hour. It is a devotional programme in which elderly people, who believe in god, read out a few verses from Thiruppugazh. In every episode, one religious scholar is featured. They read out the verses that are written in ancient Tamil literature and explain their meaning in a simplified manner for the viewers to understand them better. Thiruppugazh is a 15th-century Tamil anthology that is comprised of a compilation of songs dedicated to Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva, and the prime god of Tamil Nadu. The book was written by Arunagirinaadhar.
He was initially a hedonist, who after realising the futility of the life he has led, decided to end his life, but he was saved by a stranger, who he believed was Murugan himself. He then visited the six main temples harbouring Murugan and many others throughout India and Sri Lanka. At every temple, he wrote a few songs describing the compassion, glory, intelligence, and the beauty of Murugan, which all put together make the Thiruppugazh.
