The story focuses on the Chittu who is a simple and a fun-loving girl living in a village. She is married to a boy named Jaisurya, who is a journalist by profession living in a city. Their marriage took place in a weird situation. Earlier, Jaisurya and a girl named, Rani were in love with each other and wanted to marry but, due to some unavoidable circumstances which took place just before their wedding engagement, changed everything. Jaisurya’s mother forced him to marry Chittu whom they met while they visited her village. He was unable to deny his mother’s request as she was ill, and he wanted her to get back to normal as early as possible. He brings Chittu to his house, but treated her as a servant. After some time, the secret got revealed that Chittu and Rani are half- sisters.

Neelakuyil (translation-the blue cuckoo) is a Tamil TV serial that aired on the television in the year 2018. The show falls under the genre of family-melodrama and romance. The plot of the show was a love triangle between Chittu, who is a tribal girl; Jaisurya, who is a journalist and his 7 years long love Rani. Jaisurya loves Rani and they both want to get married but before that Surya gets a job in the Poombarai forest for which he has to travel to a village. There he is forced to marry Chittu after villagers find both of them together in a hut. Surya fails to explain to them the real reason and they both get married. When the show progresses further it is revealed that Chittu and Rani are half-sisters and in the end, Rani sacrifices her life to save Chittu and Surya. The show was directed by Biju Virgis and C.J. Baskar in collaboration. The show was produced under the big banner of Ross Petals' entertainment and was the official remake of the Bengali serial Ishti Kutum that released in the year 2011 on the famous Bengali channel Star Jalsha. The show is considered as the most popular and talked-about show of its time. Neelakuyil also takes inspiration from the Malayalam serial Neelakkuyil, which aired on the Asianet. The Malayalam show was also a massive success among the television audience which compelled the producers to adapt the show in Tamil.

Neelakuyil had a massive star cast which includes names such as Snisha Chandran (Chittu), Sathya (Surya), and Chandhana Shetty (Rani) among many other incredible actors. The actress, Snisha Chandram who played the role of Chittu, also played the same role as a tribal girl in the original Malayalam serial Neelakkuyil from which this show takes inspiration. The show was released on Vijay TV on 17 December 2017 and ran till 24th August 2019 with a total of 211 episodes. Out of all 211 episodes, only 103 were directed by Biju Virgis.
