Plot
Ripley is a web series about a man named Tom Ripley. He is a con man who is struggling to make it in life. One day, a wealthy man named Herbert Greenleaf, who is not aware of Mr. Ripley’s lousy situation, thinks that he is his son’s friend and thus, hires him to convince his vagabond son to come back home from Italy, where he had supposedly gone for his artistic aspirations. Tom follows Herbert’s instructions and leaves for Italy. In Atrani, Italy, he meets Dickie, who is living an easygoing life with his girlfriend. His girlfriend is writing a travel book about Atrani. Tom becomes fascinated with Dickie’s attractiveness, and carefree lifestyle. Tom decides to come clean about the reason he came to meet Dickie and reveals Dickie’s father’s plans. This sincerity of his impresses Dickie and it gains his trust, so he decides to invite him to his villa to stay. One day, a friend of Tom’s named Freddie Miles comes across Tom and Dickie at a cafe. Freddie is suspicious of Dickie and thinks he might have ulterior motives. He then invites Dickie and his girlfriend to join him for Christmas in Cortina, where they can spend their time skiing. Tom updates Herbert Greenfield, telling him that there is progress in his mission of bringing his son back but also asks him to send more funds. The rest of the plot is about how the plan of bringing Herbert’s son back home turns tragic and morbid when crimes are committed and greed, envy and rage get in the way of everything.
Star Performance
Andrew Scott’s acting is so brilliant that it leaves audiences fascinated by the character of Tom Ripley. Andrew takes on the role of his character so well that it seems as though he has always intimately known his character. Dakota Fanning has also given an outstanding performance as Dickie’s girlfriend, Marge.
Analysis
The book’s execution into this live adaptation is impressive for the most part. The cinematography with the black-and-white theme is excellent, while the noir theme persists in its artistic visuals. The malevolent atmosphere keeps us wanting more, just for the thrill of it, and the black and white theme colours make us focus on the shadows and the intriguing play between light and dark. Rather than making it dull, the black-and-white theme makes the show more unique and keeps it interesting. The suspense is well played out. All the actors have given an excellent performance, including the supporting cast.
