Plot

This movie tells the story of a couple, who finds it hard to make their marriage work and is involved in infidelity. After three years of dating. Kavya and Anirudh have been married for 12 years. Meanwhile, both are having an extra-marital affair, Kavya, a dentist, is seeing photographer Vikram while businessman Adi is involved with actor Nora. All is going well until Kavya and Adi get in the mood for love with each other after a visit to Kavya’s hometown in Ooty brings back all their memories of how madly they were in love. Where does the couple go from here? How did their marriage reach this point? Will Kavya and Ani reconcile as they realize what they felt for each other was deep, or will they walk away separately with the current people they’re dating?

Star Performances

Vidya as always delivers a top-notch performance. While her laughter is infectious and comic timing is bang on, what impresses the most is her emotional portrayal of her character. It is delightful to watch Pratik portraying a character that’s intense as well as carefree. It is great to see his comic and romantic roles. The ease with which he amalgamates comedy in his dialogues and still effortlessly holds the ground is beyond appreciation. Sendhil Ramamurthy as the hotshot and artistic photographer is convincing. His calmness and his expressions greatly support the movie’s narrative. Ileana D’Cruz stands out as a “whiny,” at times ditzy but easily pleased girlfriend. Her character lacks depth, though she performed pretty decent with the script on hand. Vidya and Pratik’s chemistry works wonders on screen. Both actors deliver good performances throughout.

Analysis

In the film, the weight of marital distance is etched onto every frame. And it is a welcome break to see a couple in their late thirties-early forties having a flawed yet beautiful relationship.

The film treats these romantic entanglements with a refreshing, nonjudgmental frankness, debunking the possibility of divorce and disbanding the concept of matrimony from its eternal promise. The romantic comedy introduces an unexpected when the flame of love re-ignites between a married couple who are already dating different persons. Director Shirsha Guha Thakurta showcases a refreshing perspective on the not-so-unique premise of rediscovering love or choosing between spouses and lovers. The film opts for a lighthearted approach even when dealing with adultery. The debutante director and the writing team knit a light narrative infused with humor. Even during tense moments, they hardly divert from the approach described above. The first half feels smooth, but the second half stumbles a little as Kavya and Aniruddh's attempts to juggle their rekindled romance and their existing relationships become repetitive. Cinematographer Kartik deserves appreciation for his skillful camera work and the brilliance with which he captures the beauty of Ooty. The lofi-music by Lost Stories, The Local, When Chai Met Toast, Abhishek-Ananya, and Subhajit Mukherjee enhance the experience. The soothing songs are everyone’s favorite part of the movie. The film's true strength lies in its lead cast. The leading pair shares undeniable chemistry, captivating viewers with their passionate reunion, the portrayal of a failing marriage, or the brewing tension. However, the film falters with its uneven pacing, especially in the latter half. Despite this, the stellar performances, humour-infused script, and beautiful visuals make it a watchable romantic comedy. It explores the complexities of modern-day relationships and dilemmas that couples, in a marriage and affair, go through, making this slice-of-life romantic comedy extremely relatable.

What’s There?

  • The performances by the stellar star cast help give this racing film an emotional core.
  • The rawness with which it showcases the modern-day relationship issues.
  • The sound and music of the film is impressive.
  • The top-notch cinematography is praiseworthy.

What’s Not There?

  • The uneven pacing, especially in the second half, was avoidable.
  • The lack of Character development in the film dilutes the sense behind her actions.

Verdict

“Do Aur do Pyaar” is a touching tale of redemption, loss, and love. It isn’t just a satirical take on modern-day relationships; it delves into the real-life issues of a middle-aged couple. It’s bold and mature and humorously expresses and explores the raw and real relationships. It also highlights the necessity of communicating with one another in every relationship. If you want to watch a modern-day rom-com with deals with some real-life issues, you should give this film a try.
