Plot

The story revolves around an eleven years old boy, Will. After the death of his mother he is left with his father, Gareth. His father was a soccer player. He returned to his son after three years and promised to take him to watch the Champions League final together which his favourite team, Liverpool FC was featuring. Unfortunately, Gareth died tragically and Will is left all alone.

To fulfil his father's wishes, he travels alone to Istanbul to watch the final match. On his journey to Istanbul he made a new friend, Alex who also was a football player in his youth. Throughout his journey, Will encounters many hurdles.

Star performance

Perry Eggleton played Will's character. His exceptional acting skills and ability to connect with audiences were top-notch. He presented his character filled with different emotions. Other stars like Damian, who played the character of Will's father with limited screen time, his performance is appreciable. The father-son relationship presented by Damian and Perry is remarkable. Another significant character is Alex. Kiehlinge played his role. His chemistry with Will is terrific. He  helped Will's character to develop while his character dealt with his own problems and complexities.

Analysis

The movie is not entirely about soccer, rather it is also a tale about hope, resilience, and a sense of loss. It is an inspirational movie. Will an eleven year old go through many difficult times. First his mother dies and then his father. As Will's name indicates, his character has a strong will power that gives him strength to tackle hardships. The Film shows soccer as a source of connection between people of different nationalities. There were many emotional scenes in the movie, for instance, Will taking a bus to go to Istanbul alone, and the death of his father. Infact, the cinematography was awesome as it added realistic characteristics to the movie.

Despite the emotional connection of the film with the audience it somewhere lacked in script. The script was poor. It could have been more interesting with some comedy in between scenes. The soundtrack was delightful and joyful. However, the script lost excitement towards the ending as the plot was pretty predictable.

What's there?

  • The movie is suitable for kids as it is more of an inspirational and motivational movie for them.
  • Actors delivered a terrific performance. The transition of script to film is palpable.
  • Definitely for a football fan. Any sports-enthusiastic person will love this movie.
  • The story presented realistic backgrounds depicting European society. The cinematography is top notch.
  • Elements of friendship, family bond, hope, and love are shown in the film.

What's not there?

  • The characters are flat and linear. They do not undergo any development. The character of  Will doesn't develop much.
  • The movie's pace reduces, which makes it dull in some scenes.
  • The script lacks exciting ideas. The plot is predictable, just like other sport dramas.
  • Limited focus on sports. The film had focused mainly on Liverpool.
  • Sometimes the script has many over emotional scenes, which makes it more of an emotional manipulation.

Verdict

Will is a story about individual triumph over hardships and hurdles that gets in the way of an 11 year old boy. It also falls under the category of family friend drama as it is quite a sentimental tale. The movie is a must watch for children and for soccer fans as well. However, if one prefers fast paced movies and gets bored easily, they can skip the movie.

As a one-time watch, the movie is excellent.
