Plot 

The film’s protagonist is Sam, played by Andrew Garfield, an unemployed 33 years old man unable to pay his rent. Sam was watching television and kissing his new neighbor Sarah, played by Riley Keough, but is interrupted by Sarah’s roommates. The next day, Sarah and her roommates were gone. Sam, who does drugs and believes in weird theories, becomes obsessed with finding Sarah and her roommates. Later that day, he saw a news report about a billionaire who was found burned dead in a car with three women. He recognized the hat seen at the scene as Sarah’s. He ventures out to discover the truth behind Sarah’s disappearance and her connection with the dead billionaire. The film follows Sam on his journey to unravel dangerous mysteries in order to find Sarah.   

Star Performance 

Andrew Garfield gives a stellar performance as Sam, a faltering adult, who seems to have given up on becoming a valuable part of society. He spends his time following conspiracy theories and finding hidden meanings to common things. Andrew Garfield perfectly portrays Sam as the airhead he is, and makes the audience frustrated when Sam cannot comprehend the easiest of clues hiding in plain sight. 

Analysis 

“Under The Silver Lake” is a great film with a very unique concept. It attempts to delve into the realm of conspiracy theories, and tries to highlight that nothing is as it seems. Although it doesn’t entirely succeed in doing so, the film is still a great effort on the part of the director David Robert Mitchell.

Verdict

“Under The Silver Lake” features Andrew Garfield’s stellar performance, good cinematography and a storyline that reels the viewer in. The film would be a good watch for mystery enthusiasts.
