Plot
When their daughter's community scholarship program falls through, Scott and Kate Johansen find themselves in a bind. They find an ally in their desperate neighbour Frank, whose wife plans to divorce him over his gambling and pornography addiction. Joining forces, the three open an illegal casino in Frank's home. What ensues is a series of wild and hilarious events that started with the couple's earnest dedication to securing their daughter's college fund.
Star Performance
The film stars Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell in lead roles with Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Kroll, Ryan Simpkins and Allison Tolman as part of the supporting cast. Both Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell do a stellar job of bringing the slapstick comedic vibe they embody to the big screen, and their dynamic is what keeps viewers hooked for the majority of the film.
Analysis
The House is one of those movies that are so over-the-top and silly that they come off as ridiculous, but not in a bad way. It's not extremely hilarious, but has its fair share of genuinely funny moments. It's not all fun and games either, because it does deal with some genuine issues that are central to the plot, such as the all-American dilemma of securing enough funds for college tuition. The chemistry between the lead actors is fascinating to watch: they lend relatability to the film, and even in their wildest moments, they come off as a sincere and fun couple, remaining likeable even after partaking in some wild situations and taking concerning decisions.
It's not a very serious movie, and it does not try to be: it comes across as what it's supposed to be, a light-hearted, comedic flick that sweeps you along in the silly madness that follows in the course of the movie's events.
What’s There?

Verdict
The House is one of those comedies that is literally just that, a comedy. It does not attempt to be serious and dignified, and at its core, is a film riddled with slapstick humour, nonsensical events, wild goose chases and silly characters. It's a fun, entertaining, light hearted watch and won't disappoint if you're not looking for a serious message or depth; just entertainment for the entirety of the movie.
