Plot

The Boy is a 2016 paranormal movie, featuring Greta Evans as Lauren Cauhen, aka the protagonist. Greta somehow agrees to serve as a maid for an elderly couple in a lowly English village due to her situation. As she enters the house of this elderly couple, eerie things start taking place. The suspense begins when it is revealed that she is not supposed to care for an actual human but a life-like doll named Brahms, based on the couple's deceased. Brahms had died two decades ago in a tragic accident. The conflict arises when she witnesses troublesome, horrific activities if she fails to follow the rules given to her.

The side characters such as Malcolm and the cryptic elderly couple add to the depth and horror of the movie. This makes the film an intriguing and worthy experience for the viewers.

Star Performances

The most commendable and appreciative performance is of Laura Cohan portraying Greta Evans, who plays the role of the female main character. She gets into the character of Greta - a fierce woman trapped in an uncanny situation without realizing it initially. Laura’s acting can bring goosebumps and give jitters to the audience. At the same time, viewers are on the edge of their seats, waiting to see how the story progresses. Laura’s acting adds to the depth of her character, plus her performance delivery is top-notch.

Analysis

The Boy is a psychological horror-based movie that focuses on the themes of horror and supernatural elements as expected. It commences just like any other traditional horror movie but soon leaves the audience on the edge of their seats with its intriguing elements, twists, and turns. Soon, we realize that it also explores the themes of emotional loss, human turmoil, and grief through the symbolism of a doll.

With its gripping storyline, The Boy fits well within its category, and the performances of the characters make this movie even better. But the only problem lies with the execution of the plot, which could have been written more accurately and more creatively to present it in front of the audience. With its flaws and merits, this movie is worth watching.

What’s There?

  • A gripping storyline to engage the viewers.
  • The perfect setting - a desolate lowly countryside village.

What’s not There?

  • The screenwriter could have structured the screenplay more creatively.
  • The characters could have executed the resolution of the conflict in a better, structured way.

Verdict

If watching horror movies gives thrills and chills to you, The Boy will make your day. With its horrific elements and gripping storyline, it cannot disappoint the audience in any way. Also, if taken more cynically, and you will enjoy it just as much. The direction and the performances of the actors will get the audience hooked and not disappoint the viewers.
