Star Performance
The story is set in a small mining town in West Virginia and is centred around three characters suffering from interwoven tragedies. Elizabeth Banks, Boyd Holbrook and Jacob Lofland have rendered commendable performances. Sara Colangelo has rendered her script with sensitivity. The story revolves around a mining accident with a lone survivor, followed by the disappearance of a teenage boy that draws together the surviving miner, the lonely wife of the mine owner, and a local boy in a tangle of deceit and secrets. The boy, played by Jacob Lofland, is a fine young actor. The plot has potential to become a good suspense thriller but loses focus midway owing to its slow pace and often confusing narrative.
Analysis
In a small town, a mining accident has killed several workers, leaving a lone survivor, Amos Jenkins (Boyd Holbrook). The accident shook all the townspeople who have held the mine owner, Bill Doyle, known to be a cold, heartless businessman, responsible for this tragedy. Soon after the accident, the mine ownerās teenage son goes missing and this proves to be a turning point. This movie has a modern noir feeling, with a slow pace and convoluted backdrop. However, Jacob Lofland, who plays a local boy, Owen, is a natural in every scene despite having a minor role to play. Paired with Elizabeth Banks and Josh Lucas, the movie has a fantastic cast and gets featured in a congenial setting for a perfect thriller. However, the story has several loopholes that catch attention, the mystery is not gripping enough and the climax leaves us with more questions than answers.
