Plot

The film “Kite” 2014 is a live-action adaptation of the anime of the same name. This film is about a fight for justice in a dystopian society where demented people kidnap vulnerable children and sell them to flesh cartels. The main character in the film is a young woman named Sawa who is under a disguise as a prostitute, as she is on a mission to kill some of the leaders of the cartel. Her main goal is to find the murderers of her mother and her policeman father, who were both killed by the human traffickers. Her father had a partner, and this man adopted her when her parents died. He assists her in her mission, and ironically, he also supplies drugs to her which help her erase tragic memories of her parents’ deaths. In the end, she even reaches Emir, the leader who once killed her parents. Later on, she tries to relax herself by consuming a drug called “Amp”, which not only relaxes her but also erases her memories.

Star Performance

Callan McAuliffe acts convincingly as the character Oburi. Samuel M. Jackson gives an acceptable performance.

Analysis

One difference from the original anime is that Sawa’s mentor did not have sex with her which to be honest, is an improvement of the original plot. A drawback in the film is that although there is female representation through Sawa’s character, she is still being unnecessarily sexualised and she does not have much personality. Most of the character performances were rather clumsy. India Eisley’s dialogues also seemed stiff and unnatural. The twist in the film does not seem like a twist at all, as it was undeniably predictable from miles away. Overall, the movie is pretty dull. The female protagonist did not have any fighting skill or training. The action scenes are okay but did not leave a lasting impression. The visuals are pretty good.

What’s There?

  • This film is a toned-down version of the original anime. The original anime had obscene sex scenes and themes of child slavery, which this adaptation does not have.
  • The cinematography and visuals of the film are good.

What’s Not There?

  • There seemed to be a lack of effort put into female representation through Sawa’a character.
  • Sawa’s character is unnecessarily sexualised and she lacks personality development and on top of that, she has no training or fighting skills despite being the main female character in an action movie. This made the film rather disappointing to watch.
  • The so-called twist in the film is too predictable.
  • The acting of most of the actors was okay but not excellent.

Verdict

For those who like the original anime, I suggest you do not watch this film as it is very toned-down from the original and the plot is changed in many parts. Hence, if you expect it to be the same as the original you will be disappointed.
