Plot
The film follows Emma Woodhouse, played by Anna Taylor-Joy. Emma is a beautiful young lady of Regency-era England hailing from a good family. Emma searches for a new friend after her governess got married. She befriends Harriet Smith, played by Mia Goth, whose parents are unknown but has her education provided for. When Emma learns that Mr. Martin, played by Connor Swindells, and Harriet reciprocate feelings of love, she claims she wouldn’t interfere with it, but manipulates Harriet into rejecting Mr. Martin, because Emma believed that Mr. Elton likes Harriet. She similarly keeps on interfering in the love life of those around her, and although she never has any bad intentions, complicates others’ as well as her own relationship. The film follows Emma on her journey of interfering in other people’s relationship without any ulterior motives to ultimately finding her own match.
Star Performance
Anna Taylor-Joy gives a good performance as Emma. She does not try to make the viewers like Emma, or provide justifications for her selfishness, but portrays Emma as she was written to be.
