Produced by Kevin Krikst, Frasher Ash and Edward Martin, the film follows an amazing cast with Connor Jessup, Aaron Abraham and Aliocha Schneider in the lead roles along with Mary Walsh, Sofia Banzhaf, Joanne Kelly playing the supporting roles and a voice-over for a character by Isabella Rossellini. This film was Stephen Dunn’s feature film directorial debut inspired by his own experiences growing up. It is amazingly cinematographed by Bobby Shore, capturing the core of the film.
Plot
The film follows the story of a teenage boy, Oscar Madly, who struggles with his identity and sexuality while dealing with a strained relationship between his parents and his own abusive relationship with his father. As he navigates through his school life, experiencing a newly building romance with a peer and his passion for artistic aspirations and struggle to follow those dreams, he also contends with his past in search of acceptance for himself and people around him. The film beautifully portrays themes of relationships, love, trauma, self-discovery, loss, and acceptance. It perfectly paints the elements of a coming of age film while exploring the body horror genre while picturing the internalized homophobia of the main character through both visual effects and storytelling.
Star performance
The lead character fabulously played by Connor Jessup delivers a standout performance perfectly depicting a troubled teenager through his emotions and acting excellence. Not only the main character but the supporting roles played by Aaron Abrahams will keep you hooked on to the story, adding depths to the portrayal of the characters and the family conflict presentation. The film promises a surreal experience. The other actors including Aliocha Schnieder, Mary Walsh and Sofia Banzhaf also deliver dynamic and plausible performances.
Analysis
Closet Monster is an outstanding film with praiseworthy characters. It ideally portrays the complex themes of self-discovery, sexuality, familial relationships, love, loss, trauma, homophobia and struggles of finding oneself through conflicts within oneself as well as the surrounding. Stephen Dunn’s direction is notable for his ability to portray such complex characters with a touch of real life. The writing effectively reflects the complexity of the characters and depicts the ups and downs of  relationships and personal growth. The film resonates emotionally with the audience and manages to provoke their emotional responses, leaving a lasting impression on the viewers. It is a perfect blend of realism with artistic depiction, though some viewers might find it challenging or uneven. Overall closet monster is a compelling and visually engaging film that offers a fresh perspective to the struggles of adolescence and exploration of identity.
