Ahead of the Rio Olympics, the former Olympic quarter-finalist boxer and television actor Akhil Kumar spoke about his take on the exclusion of two-time Olympic medalist, wrestler Sushil Kumar. Sushil Kumar approached the High Court in Delhi and also extended his plea to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold a trial match between him and the selected player Narsingh Yadav. Sushil wants to get a fair chance and feels that this match shall be the deciding factor to the player who represents India in the 74kg category. Akhil said that Yadav had worked hard for earning the place, but that doesn’t imply the exclusion of the supremely skilled Sushil Kumar. He feels that the man who has already won medals in the same platform twice can’t be excluded from the Rio Olympics without a trial match. Akhil justifies Sushil’s side in requesting a match between him and Yadav. The primary reason was that the format or weight category that Sushil was fighting is no longer a part of the Games. To this, the Asian Games and Common Wealth Medalist, Akhil says that a sportsman is always mentally prepared to play a game of a higher level than the usual one that they play for. He further questioned if Narsingh fears a loss against the two-time medalist Sushil Kumar. He explains that prior to the Games, in case, Narsingh defeats a player of the caliber of Sushil Kumar, who has won accolades several times for the nation, it will only boost his morale and enhance his confidence. The Wrestling Federation of India is reluctant to conduct the match between the two and Akhil says that if they are confident about Narsingh representing the country internationally, then there is no reason to avoid a match with Sushil Kumar.
