Nazia Hassan is a famous Urdu singer, songwriter, lawyer, and social activist based in Pakistan. She was born on 3 April 1965 in Karachi, Pakistan, and is popularly known as the most influential singer in the subcontinent. Her father, Basir Hassan, was a businessman, and her mother, Muniza Basir, was an active social worker. She graduated in Business Administration and Economics from Richmond American University, London, and holds an LLB degree from the London University. Nazia worked at United Nations Women International Leadership Program as an intern and later worked for United Nations Security Council. Nazia married Mirza Ishtiaq Baig, a businessman, on 30 March 1995.

Her married life had always been problematic and filled with difficulties, and she separated from Mirza in 2000. She has a son with Ishtiaq named Arez Hassan, born on 7 April 1997. She was an active member of many social organizations, was the founder of Battle Against Narcotics (BAN), and worked for children, youth, and women in distress in Karachi. Nazia Hassan was appointed as a cultural ambassador by UNICEF in 1991. She also won Pride of Performance, a Pakistani civilian award. The first album by Nazia Hassan was Disco Deewane, released in 1981 and became a widely loved song and was a hit in West Indies, Latin America, and Russia. Nazia Hassan and her brother Zoheb Hassan sang and performed in various shows and have sold over 65 million records worldwide. Nazia Hassan died on 13 August 2000 due to lung cancer in London at 35. On 10 August, she has admitted to North London Hospice as her health condition deteriorated. She died after getting discharged from the hospital post a pulmonary embolism. After her death, her parents founded Nazia Hassan Foundation in 2003 to help needy people regardless of caste, creed, and religion. In her short life span, Nazia became one of the most popular Pakistani celebrities in the music industry and the first Pakistani singer to make it to the British Charts.
