Malani Bulathsinhala was a Sri Lankan singer and musician. She was born on December 12, 1949, in a Sri Lankan city, Boralesgamuwa. She was the daughter of Wilson and P. K. Bulathsinhala. The singer was the eldest child and had two siblings— her brother, Sireshan and her sister Sandhya. Sandhya is also a prominent Sri Lankan singer. Bulathsinhala’s husband, Hearth Muidiyanselage Jayawardena was also a popular Sri Lankan musician. Their son, Kasun Kalhara is also a popular Sri Lankan musician. Her three-year-old daughter died of dengue fever. Bulathsinhala started singing at a young age. She first learned music from her music teacher, Kamalini Perera. She joined the radio in the Lama Pitiya program at Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation at the age of 10. The singer earned her graduation degree from a Sri Lankan college, the State Song and Music College of Fine Arts. Later, she decided to go to India to pursue music at Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University (now, Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya). Indian Classical and Oriental music were her specialised music.
Bulathsinhala sang her career’s first song, “Yala Yala Yala Yamu Saththu Balanna”. It was aired on the radio. Many years later, she participated in the Prabodha G radio program. She sang the song, “Sanda Madale Sita”. She sang other songs like— “Pipena Malakata”, “Thun Ruwane Saranai” and “Himi Sanaramara”. She also wrote songs and sang duets with other singers. Her notable songs are “Duwai Puthai Mamai”, “Obata Ma Adaraya Kala Bawa”, “Pelin Pelata Riya Perahera”, “Ganta Nadaya”, “Senehasa Puda”, “Mala Wata Kara”, “Hiru Awara Gosin Kal Athuwama”, “Muveththiyai Mama”, and many more. Unfortunately, Bulathsinhala died at the age of 51. During her tour to America in 2001, she was found dead in the bathroom. Reports claimed that she died due to anaphylaxis. The allergic reaction came from the hair dye.
