Gurdial Singh Rahi (10th January 1933 – 16th August 2016) was an Indian novelist and writer who used to write Punjabi stories, short stories, novels, etc. he began his literary career in 1957 and published the short story "Bhaganwale." Surinder Singh converted the novel into a film. He worked on the making of another novel, Anhe Ghore Da Daan. The novel was then adopted by film celebrities and was converted into a film of the same name. Gurdial Singh Rahi was honoured with a Padma Shri Award in 1998 and a Jnanpith Award in 1999.
In 2016, Gurdial Singh Rahi suffered a heart attack, after which he went paralysed (partially). He was then admitted to a hospital in Bathinda. He was kept on a ventilator but could not survive more. On 16th August 2016, he was taken off life support in the hospital as he did not show any sign of recovery. Gurdial Singh Rahi was then declared dead. He was survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
