Gurmeet Bawa was a well-known folk singer from Punjabi Film Industry. Her birth date is 18 February 1944. Her birthplace is Kothe, Punjab, India. Her father is S. Uttam Singh Uttam Singh is an Indian musician (Music director, >> Read More... , and her mother is Ram Kaur. Her mother died when she was two years old. During that time, girls were not allowed to study, but Bawa studied and cleared the Junior Basic Training exam. Then, she became a teacher. Gurmeet became the first woman to become a teacher from her region. She started her singing career in 1968. She used to play Punjabi folk instruments like alghoza, chimta, dholki, and tumbi. She was also known as Lambi Hek di Malika for her long Hek, which means Queen of singing in an extended breath holding, breath during singing. She holds her breath for about 45 seconds.
She was the first Punjabi singer to sing on the public service broadcaster Doordarshan. She represented India at the festival of the USSR in 1987 and Japan in 1988. She also represented India at the Thailand Culture Centre in Bangkok in 1988 and performed in the 25th Jashan-E-Azad festival in Tripoli, Libya, in 1989. She was awarded with Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government. Bawa married Kirpal Bawa, a folk singer, and had three daughters. She received many awards like the State Award from the Punjab Government, The National Ahilya Award by the Madhya Pradesh Government, Sangeet Puraskar by Punjab Natak Academy, and many more. Her famous songs are Ghorian, Mirza, Jugni, and many more. She worked in the Music Department in the movies Balbeero Bhabi, released in 1981, Sarpanch, released in 1982, Putt Jattan De, released in 1983, Laajo, released in 1983, Jora Jatt, released in 1997, Jamraud, and many more. She died on 21 November 2021 in Amritsar, Punjab, India.
