He was the youngest among his brothers. Due to the partition, his family moved to Bodalwala village. Later they settled in the Bharowal Khurd village. Sandhu's son is also a singer. Didar Sandhu also served as the Sarpanch of his town. He met a Punjabi singer Mohd. Sadiq when he was employed by the Punjab government at a theatre company. The early songs of Sandhu were recorded in the voice of Mohd. Sadiq and Narinder Biba. His songs gave him a distinct identity in Punjab music. He was noted as a singer and sang many duet songs. Sandhu fell ill due to alcohol consumption and died in 1991.
