Bhai Baldev Singh Vadala was a prominent Sikh kirtani (hymn singer) and a renowned exponent of Gurbani. He was born in the village of Vadala in Punjab, India, in 1945. From a young age, Vadala showed an inclination towards Sikhism and music and started learning Kirtan (Sikh devotional music) under the guidance of his father, Bhai Gurdev Singh. Vadala's talent was recognized early on, with frequent invitations to perform at various Sikh religious events across India. He was known for his soulful renditions of Gurbani and his ability to connect with his audience through his music. His powerful voice and ability to infuse emotion into singing mesmerised the audience. In addition to his skills as a kirtani, Vadala was also an accomplished tabla player with a deep understanding of Indian classical music.
He often incorporated elements of classical music into his kirtan performances, creating a unique style that was his own. Vadala's contributions to Kirtans were invaluable. He had been honored with several awards, including the Shiromani Raagi award and the Padma Shri award. He also served as the head priest of the historic Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in New Delhi, India. Vadala passed away in 2018, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of Sikh devotional music. His contributions to the field have been remembered and celebrated by his followers and admirers worldwide.
