Channi Singh

Channi Singh is an Indian singer and a well-known Bhangra musician. His original name is Harcharanjit Singh Rupal and is popularly known as the Godfather of Bhangra in West India. He was born on 12 January 1952 and completed his MA from DAV College Jalandhar in 1974. Channi Singh is a talented singer, folk dancer, and amateur wrestler at Patiala University and Guru Nanak Dev University. He went to the UK in 1976, spreading the popularity of Punjabi music among the Punjabi youth of the UK under the band, Alaap. The band was formed in 1977 by Harjeet Gandhi, Randhir Sahota, and Inder Kalsi and is famous for its modern style in Punjabi music, known as UK Bhangra. Alaap has performed at many stages in the US, Dubai, Canada, Australia, London, and many more and became the first British Asian Band to perform in Pakistan in 1992.

Alaap became very popular and has known as The hottest and most successful Bhangra band in the history of the world. Alaap band received several awards in the music industry, like Best Asian Band and Best Male Vocalist, and has recorded its name in the Guinness Book of World Records for having Most Recordings by a Bhangra Band. Channi Singh has given several hit albums and songs in the Bollywood film industry. Yalgaar (1992), Shaktiman (1993), Janasheen (2003), Top Less, and Mr. Bhatti on Chutti are some of the famous Bollywood films to which Channi Singh has given his voice and music. Chham Chham Nachdi Phiran, Teri Chunni De Sitare, and Dance with Alaap are the best hits by Channi Singh. Channi Singh received several awards for his contribution to the music industry.

He is the first singer to receive Lifetime Achievement for Punjabi music by Lord Mayor of Leicester at the 13th-anniversary celebrations of BBC Radio Punjabi Programme. Channi has appointed the Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2012. In 2017, he got Lifetime Achievement Award at Brit Asia TV Music Awards.
