David Abraham Cheulkar was born on 1909. He is widely known as David. David was a Bollywood film actor. He is a Jewish Indian. He belongs to the Bene Israel community. There are the Marathi speaking community in Mumbai. He graduated in the year 1930 with B.A. degree from the University of Mumbai. He struggled for six years to find a successful job for him. At that time, he earned a law degree from the Government Law College. He then chose to become a professional actor by entering the Bollywood industry.

He got his first role in the film with the support of his friend Nayampalli on January 15, 1937. He was an expert character actor. Before entering films, he acted in Hindi serials. He was well associated with IPTA. During his early times of his career, he worked in Khwaja Ahmad Abbas’s films. Pardesi, Munna, Shehar Aur Sapna, Char Dil Char Raahein were those films. Munna and Char Dil Char Raahein won the National Film Award. He always played friendly and helpful characters.

He is well known for the role ‘John Chacha’ in Boot Polish. He received the Filmfare Award in 1955 for the Best Supporting Actor. The film obtained the Best Film Award. He starred in the song ‘Nanhe Munne Bachche’. It was a famous Bollywood song during that time. David also anchored award shows and other notorious functions. David became the famous and best host, actor and compere in 1959-1975. The PM of India, Jawaharlal Nehru previously said: “An event would be incomplete without David’s Speech”. David also promoted Sports.

He then became the representative of India’s Olympic Games. David acted in nearly 110 Indian films. At 1960’s and 70’s he was an element of many Bollywood films. He was most famous for uncle and father roles among the filmmakers. He began his film journey in 1941. In 1960 he became a top character artist. Naya Sansar, Amar Deep, Boot Polish, Pardesi, Ek Phool Char Kaante, Upkar, Anupama, Khubsoorat, Anurag and Khatta Meeta are some of his notable films. He is also known for his comedic role in Golmaal and Chupke Chupke. In 1969 he won the Padma Shri honour from the Indian Government. David died on 1981 December 28 at the age of 73. He passed away because of a heart attack in Canada, Toronto.
