Amruta Mapuskar is from Ratnagiri, a town in Maharashtra, India. Amruta is an Indian actress. She started her theater career alongside her father. She has a Masters in Theater from Mumbai University and a diploma in Physical Theater from the Duende school in Greece. She has also trained as a Dance Movement Therapy facilitator, certified by CID-UNESCO and the Creative Movement Therapy Association of India.
Amruta Mapuskar is a dedicated Storyteller with a diverse interest in various traditions and art forms. She has also carved a unique path in the world of performing arts. Clowning and physical theater serve as her primary medium of expression, complimented by a profound curiosity about the mind-body connection. This curiosity led her to explore Indian Dance forms like Tai Chi, Kalaripayattu, and performance art, creating a foundation that allows her to craft performances that honor the intricate expressions of the body. Amruta’s journey as a performer was enriched by studying under distinguished figures such as the late Mr. Philip Zarilli, internationally acclaimed clown Avner Eisenberg, and performance artist Jurgen Fritz, among others. Her training encompasses the Grotowski and LeCoq schools of thought, adding depth to her artistic exploration.
Amruta is commonly known for the movies “ The Gift Click to look into! >> Read More... ” and “Bombay Snow”. “The Gift” is a 14- minute thriller and drama short film released in 2014. It was directed by Triparna Banerjee Bio coming soon... >> Read More... and written by Aritra Banerjee. Amruta acted as Shyam’s wife in this short film. “Bombay Snow” is a 5- minute short film. It was released in 2011. It won the 2011 Winner Dimensions Mumbai Special Mention in the Bombay International Film Festival. Chinmay Dalvi was the director for this film.
Amruta acted as the prostitute in this short film. An exceptional achievement in Amruta’s career was being the first woman from India to receive the ‘Julie Goell Eccentric Woman Scholarship,’ attending a program in the USA. She has been actively involved in professional and experimental theater in India since 2010, receiving recognition through grants and fellowships. In her solo performance, ‘Rapid-I-Movement,’ co-created with John Britton, Amruta explored dream states and the subconscious mind, challenging perceptions of reality. As a Performance Artist, she has performed globally from Kolkata to Bristol Arnolfini Gallery in the UK.
Amruta is also a founder of ‘Madman and Me,’ an organization connecting diverse art forms to society; she has facilitated training opportunities for Physical Theatre and Clowning across India. She was also an Associate Artist of DUENDE, an international company dedicated to physical ensemble work. Since she dedicated eight years to researching and performing Clowning, Amruta now shares her expertise through workshops held in various locations.
She collaborates with celebrated artists worldwide, including John Britton, Phillip Zarrilli, Avner Eisenberg, and more. In essence, Amruta Mapuskar finds her artistic voice through Clowning and a rich tapestry of interdisciplinary practices, shaping the integration of body and mind into expressive performances and teaching moments.
