Meera Biswas was a renowned Assamese actress born in Nalbari, Assam, on December 31, 1943. Married to construction businessman Jagdish Chandra Biswas, she gave birth to four daughters and one son, one of whom was the bandit queen fame, Seema Biswas She is very much popular by the name “Phoolan Devi >> Read More... . Reportedly, it was her husband who encouraged her to take up acting, which led her to become the first known artist from her hometown, Nalbari. She was heavily praised for her work in Deepa Mehta's Water (2005), ultimately winning the national award.
Apart from acting in Assamese films like Xarapat and Ratnakar (her debut and last film, respectively), she also worked in various plays like Kio, Moi Rahmote Koiso, Siraj, and Emuthi Saul. The actress was also honoured with the Jiwan Silpi Adya Sarma Award. Meera Biswas took her last breath on January 5, 2021, in Beltola. She desired her body to be donated; thus, her eyes were gifted to Sri Sankardeva Nethralaya in Guwahati and her body to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).Â
