But Ambedkar refused as he came here on His Highness Sayajirao Gaekwad III scholarship at the State of Baroda. Ambedkar cannot afford to study in America. He works part-time washing plates and cleaning. He passed his master's exam in June 1915, specialising in economics and other subjects, including sociology, history, philosophy, and anthropology.

He defended a thesis, Ancient Indian Commerce. John Dewey and his work on democracy influenced him. In 1916, Ambedkar completed his second thesis on the title, National Dividend of India - A Historical and Analytical Study, for another M.A. He enrolled in the bar course at Gray's Inn on October 1916, at the same time, he enrolled at the London School of Economics, where he began working on a doctoral thesis. 1917 The term of his Baroda scholarship being over, he was obliged to return to India in June with his unfinished work; he was, however, allowed to return and complete it within four years.

He returned his valuable and much-loved collection of books on a steamer but was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat. Ambedkar travelled to Baroda State to work as an intern in the Accountant General's office. A scholarship of £11.50 a month for three years was awarded to the young Ambedkar, and according to the agreement, he was to serve Baroda for ten years after completing his studies. However, upon reaching Baroda, he realised one thing that none of the Hindu hotels would allow him to stay due to his caste. He found a Parsee inn, but non-Parsees were not allowed to stay. He and the Parsi innkeeper reached a compromise whereby Ambedkar gave his name as a Parsi and was allowed to stay. The story goes on.
