Ram and his wife, Dhanu, live in a chawl in Mumbai. Ram is working as a security guard. With his small income, they live a contended life. Their neighbour helps them very much and cares for them as their mother. But, her son is a wastrel who sits idle at home and orders his mother to do all the chores. He scolds his mother for helping Ram and Dhanu. This hurts Ram a lot. Soon, Dhanu gives birth to a girl child, and they name her Mukta. After a couple of years, Dhanu suffers from a medical complication. Ram hides that she suffers from a serious disease and spends most of his income on her medicines. However, she finds it out and asks Ram not to spend for her. Soon, she dies and leaves Ram and Mukta in trouble. Ram takes care of Mukta as a single parent. Their neighbour supports them as ever. Mukta has grown up and takes the responsibilities at home. What happens next in their lives forms the rest of the story.
