Anakalniya is a Marathi serial that premiered on 5th November 2015 and was telecasted only on Thursday and Friday at 10 p.m. The serial is a horror thriller which is set in the area of Konkan located in Maharashtra and revolves around the concept of superstitions and religious beliefs of the people which often leads to criminal intent and offenses. The serial introduces the viewers to a woman named Urmila in the first episode. Urmila is shown to be a young and beautiful woman who has just returned to her hometown after years of staying away. She is all grown up now and yet she seems young. She is portrayed as a beautiful and kind soul who is always ready to fight for herself and for others. She is determined, and very stubborn.

She always stands up for justice and can't stand any wrongdoings. She is also portrayed to be very curious and is the main character of the serial. As the serial progresses, the viewers get to see strange acts throughout the episodes. The serial revolves around an ancient rock named “Balicha Dagad” which is located near the seashore on the outskirts of the town where Urmila is living. There is something about this specific place that draws Urmila’s attention, however, whenever she wants to investigate the matter by asking the villagers, they act strange and often avoid the question out of fear or superstitious beliefs. After some time Urmila does some research on this subject and gets to know about many facts and stories revolving around this rock and the reason for which the villagers are afraid of the place itself and consider it as haunted.

As she digs deeper into the situation she discovers the legend surrounding the rock. She finds out that years ago, in ancient times the rock used to be a place for sacrifice involving humans. These sacrifices were made to appease some deity or the supernatural realm and to end the great famine experienced by the area. After the sacrifices were made the place had suddenly become haunted because the spirits of those who were sacrificed had returned for vengeance which proved to be a problem for the town's folk. The serial aims to make people aware of superstitions and how following them is a bad thing. How Urmila spreads awareness and how she stops the customs in order to bring peace to the disturbed souls is constituted by the rest of the episodes.
