Backward villages in Maharashtra have men with more than one wife, and each wife is allocated to do daily household work. Shanta is the wife of Mr. Bhagat Ram. She forced him to do a second marriage as she was tired of doing all the work alone. After that, Bhagat Ram marries Beena. Shanta feels jealous of her when she sees her getting physical with Bhagat Ram. Beena hurts herself while going to fill the water and cannot do the household work. Shanta then forced Bhagat Ram to do a third marriage. Bhagat Ram marries Maya and feels ignored by the other two wives, and also has an affair outside when Beena is found dead in the village.
