Gurukul is a spirituality based reality TV show which came on the channel Star Plus. The series is a Hindi language one that came on every week on Sunday in the one-hour time slot of 8 PM to 9 PM. It premiered on Indian television screens on 7th July 2002. The program aims to enrich the television viewing experience on the weekends. It got aimed primarily at the new generation of young adults, who are increasingly getting more and more influenced by the modern day and alien cultures. This serial attempts to enable them to know more about and appreciate the ancient Indian cultures and traditions and how they got established. These age-old customs may seem archaic at first glance but have a significance of their own, and many are relevant even today in the modern era.
Every new episode takes the viewers along through the portals of wisdom and grandeur which got bestowed upon us by our forefathers since the ancient times. It comprises of the incredible and inexhaustible beauty contained in our ancient texts. The Vedas and the Upanishads, along with our multitude of temples and the bountiful rivers, all capture this treasure trove of knowledge. Our ancient myths, the practice of yoga, the secrets of Ayurveda and alternative medicines have all enriched our lives and ensured that humanity develops beyond the ordinary. The secrets of healthy living and a good lifestyle have hence gotten propagated for as long as the memory serves. Among the many facets of our ancient history discussed are also the science behind the art of astrology and palmistry, both of which have often gotten associated with ancient India but which get understood by fewer and fewer people with each passing generation. Along with these we also delve into the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, which remains one of the most important texts in Hindu folklore.
