Rabindranath Tagore Ki Kahaaniyan is an Indian Hindi-language fictional show based on the great stories written by Rabindranath Tagore. The 2015 show was directed by Anurag Basu, Debatama Mandal, and Tani Basu. It stars talented actors like Radhika Apte, Jannat Zubair Rahmani, Bhanu Uday, Tara Alisha Berry, Sumeet Vais, and Rohan Shah in pivotal roles. The stories are set in 1920s Bengal. It deals with the legendary short stories by Nobel laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. The unique stories focus on relationships that coloured by human values and emotions. The stories were also quite empowering as many dealt with independent, confident women who stood tall on their own in a restricted Indian society. Tagore's stories were so inspirational that they brought a change in the mindset of traditional Indian values. The show premiered on 6 July 2015. Anurag Basu beautifully translated Tagore’s stories in his way. The episodes were named Chokher Bali, Charulata, Kabuliwala, Jasoos, Sampati, and Chuti.

The show consisted of 14 stories in 26 episodes, each with a unique storyline with exciting and complex characters. The episode ‘Chokher Bali’ revolves around the life of Binodini (played by Radhika Apte). Binodini is a young widow who refuses to be restricted according to the by norms of the Indian society. In the episode, she is a rebel who fights for her rights, and chases her wishes without looking down. The most beautiful and empowering trait of her character is that it is slightly gray and highly different from the average Indian Bahus of Indian TV, who are usually oppressed and pitied. Binodini is not afraid to explore her sexuality despite being a widow. In the episode, we are taken into her world as she deals with her issues. Another episode, named ‘Noshtonir,’ features a female protagonist, a housewife, Charulata (played by Amrita Puri). Charulata lives a luxurious yet isolated life in 1870’s Calcutta. Her husband is a busy journalist who has no time for her. Her husband asks his cousin, Amal, to keep Charulata company.

Soon, Charulata develops feelings for her brother-in-law as both are artistically connected. Will she find the courage to act on her feelings? How will her husband react to the situation? The rest of the episode deals with that. One of the most exciting episodes is ‘Atithi.’ The story features the young Tarapada. Being a naughty little boy, he often runs away from home and takes off on various quests. Things take a dark turn when, during one such quest, he goes on a boat ride with a zamindar. There, he somehow manages to enchant him and his wife. But their daughter, Charusashi denies to endure him. Soon, Tarapada and Charu fall for each other. The zamindar fixes their marriage. Will the marriage take place? Will the social hierarchy allow them to spend the rest of their lives together? The episode deals with that. The episode ‘Manbhajan’ deals with the complex emotions that come with love.

The storyline revolves around a wealthy and spoilt son of a zamindar, Gopinath. Gopinath falls out of love with his wife, Giribala, and falls for a glamorous theater actress, Labongo. The story takes a dark turn when his wife finds out about the affair. The agitated Gopinath beats her up, he even snatches all her ornaments and leaves the house. Later in the story, he elopes with the Labongo. Gopinath’s character is a representation of a misogynistic man who is allowed to abuse women around him. The story beautifully portrays this negative character and how our patriarchal society has allowed them to behave in this way. The episode ‘Kabuliwala, highlights the bittersweet relationship between Rahmat, a fruit seller from Afghanistan and a small Bengali girl, Mini. Rahmat lives away from his home, and here he develops a beautiful bond with Mini. Things take a dark turn when he ends up spending ten years behind bars after getting into an ugly fight with a man. On the day of his release, he meets Mini and discovers that she’s all grown up now. What happens next? The story deals with that.
