Margarita was a romantic drama serial released in the year 1997 when television was experiencing its Golden age because of all the unconventional shows that were airing at the time. But even compared to its counterparts, Margarita was way ahead of its time because of its path-breaking characters and storytelling that transcended a lot of taboos of that era. Although the show falls under the genre of Romance, it can be perceived as a social drama because of its various themes and characters. The story followed Pedro, a handsome young guy who falls in love with Margarita, the titular character of the show. Margarita is lovingly called in the show as Tita by her family. Pedro and Tita fall in love and want to marry each other. So they decide to meet each other parents.
When Tita brings Pedro home to talk to her mother, Elena Mai, she is informed that since she is the younger sister in the house she can't marry because of some age-old tradition. The tradition restricts the marriage of the younger sister in the house as she has to look after her mother when nobody is around. This angers the lovers but Tita can't revolt against her mother because she loves her too much. Pedro is hurt but after a few days decides to marry Tita's elder sister Rose. Tita is heartbroken by this decision of Pedro but soon Pedro informs her that he is only marrying Rose because he wants to stay close to Tita. This makes her joyous as well as sad. Pedro moves in the house of Elena Mai with Rosie and thus begins the post-marriage affair between Tita and Pedro. Everything is going well until one day Elena Mai sees Pedro and Tita kissing each other. She is infuriated and moves Pedro and Rosie to another house, away from Tita so that her elder daughter's marriage remains stainless.
The rest of the story is a very tragic account of both Pedro and Tita as they pine for their lover while trying to not cause a ruckus. The plot thickens from here too and involves an illegitimate child, eloped lovers, and whatnot which made the show very controversial at the time of its release. The central cast included
