Bharat Ki Chhap was a 13-episode Indian documentary television series that presented the history and evolution of science and technology in India from ancient times to the modern era. The show is directed by Chandra Mukherjee and funded by the government's National Council for Science and Technology Communication, it aired on the Doordarshan in 1987 with an introduction by Professor Yash Pal. The series presented an alternative perspective on India's scientific traditions and accomplishments as compared to Western science. The show conducted visits to historical sites, interviews, and insights into the developments of the nation.
Each episode represented Indian scientific and technological progress. The episodes included topics like the Stone Age, the Harappan civilization, the Iron Age, Buddhist influences, Ayurveda, astronomy, mathematics, architecture, the impacts of colonialism and the Industrial Revolution, the role of science in India's freedom struggle, and post-independence developments in energy, agriculture, and community projects. The series marked India's journey from the Stone Age to post independent period. The documentary series aimed to educate viewers about the country's scientific heritage and achievements. A book that includes the same content was also published later.
