“Paddy, the Pelican” is an American television series debuted in Chicago in 1950. The series is popular in a peculiar way it is one of the worst animated series by Jerry Beck. The story has an IMDB rating of 2.5/10. It is a small budget animated series which is popular for pencil-shaded drawings. Paddy’s Adventures were sketched in a comic by Sam Singer. It aired on ABC network in the fall of 1951. It was aired only for a month, or to be more specific, between September 11, 1950, to October 13, 1950.

It was aired on the local stations in Chicago from 5:15 pm to 5:30 pm. Coming to the actual series, it was all pencil sketch animation by the author. The series consists of main protagonist ‘Paddy’ who apparently seems to be a pelican, ‘Kenny’ who appears to be a crow, ‘Freddie’ who seems to be a fox, and ‘Amos’ and ‘Buster’, the two bears featuring the show.

The animation is the worst part whereas the story is probably a decent one. But since it was a 50 cent budget animation, it won’t seem good to have expected it to be any better. The animation is all about pencil drawing. Although the character designs are acceptable, the background sync was not up to the mark. Coming to the voice acting, it was one guy along with his assistant doing all the voices. The lip sync was not up to the mark. Most of you might be expecting this from a 1950 show but I can guarantee that 1950 animation was fantastic as well.

We have the infamous “Fantasia” from the same timeline and that had better animation than few of the modern series. Coming back to sound effects, there were hardly any except in a particular area where an organ is being played. The introduction theme consists of a man laughing which is made to sound like a pelican but it is not even close to that. Coming to the storyline, the writer had rather an impressive thought process. Even with the bad animation and sound effects, if you place them aside, you will see that the story line is actually interesting.

It had a case of detective solving mysteries in the first and fifth episodes. Though the story was predictable, I really found some parts interesting. But the problem is that it has just 6 episodes and in that, the main protagonist is not part of two episodes, i.e. approximately 34% of the series has avoided the character. Though it is not a major flaw of an already problematic series. In order to enjoy the episode, you have to remember that the animation, sound effect and lip sync is not up to the mark but you can enjoy the storyline probably.

It is above average and is better than the rest of the departments and one must also remember that it was all done by just the author and his assistant. If we have to rate the series on a scale of 10, it will stand at somewhere around 2.5-3 only because of the storyline.
