Plot
In 1947 India gained independence from the British, but still some princely states decided not to join the Union of India. Hyderabad was one of these princely states under the control of Nizam of Hyderabad, a.k.a. Mir Osman Ali Khan. He refused to join the Union of India and signed a standstill agreement with the Union of India. The Nizam was considered to be an oppressor, so the people of Hyderabad started demanding freedom from the oppression. Hence, Nizam appointed Qasim Razvi, the leader of Razagar, a militant organization, to extinguish the flame of liberty. The story of the film meticulously explores the incident further.
Star Performances
One will definitely hate the character Qasim Razvi after watching this film which proves the acting prowess of Raj Arjun. He portrayed Qasim with such conviction that makes the audience hate his character. Markand Deshpande brilliantly played Nizam’s role in the film. Tej Sapru nailed it while portraying “the Iron man of India”, a.k.a. Sadar V. Patel. Bobby, Anasuya, Vedhika, and others also gave compelling performances in this movie.
Analysis
It isn’t easy to adapt a historically significant event on-screen; it requires a lot of resources, labor and the sheer will to justify such projects. ‘Razakar’ is one such attempt by Yaata Satyanarayana. The movie is based on the freedom struggle of the people of Hyderabad, a princely state under the control of Nizam Osman Ali Khan. They were fighting against the oppression by the peace-keeping force named Razakar, ironically the disruptor of peace in Hyderabad. The director adopted a realistic approach and showcased the brutality and cruelty faced by the people of Hyderabad, especially the Hindus. However, the raw approach is unsuitable for the general audience and can make them uncomfortable. Moreover, movie’s first-half is filled with repetitive brutal actions. The brutality and atrocities are shown without any filters and restrictions. The movie’s direction is praise-worthy as it presents a bold idea in a justified manner. The screenplay is emotion-heavy and can make viewers cry out of sympathy. The story holds something for both those who already know about the massacre and those who don’t know anything. The freedom heroes shown in this film are well portrayed, and the audience learns about their charm and glory. Raj Arjun steals the limelight as the antagonist of this film. The music by Bheems is impressive. The film’s cinematography beautifully captures the suffering and anger of the affected people. Despite of the budgetary constraints, the production value of this film is appreciable. However, the editing and VFX departments of the movie could have done better. The climax delivers what the story of the film promises to the audience.
What’s There?
• The film executed a complex story efficiently.
• The impressive acting performances of the actors in the film.
• The director’s impressive vision.
What’s Not There?
• The editing of the first-half of the film is sloppy, which makes it overstretched.
• The film’s VFX downgrades its credibility.
Verdict
‘Razakar’ is a Telugu historical drama through which the director honestly tries to showcase a brutal carnage that took place in Hyderabad during the early Independence era. The film’s intriguing concept and execution highlights the hardships and difficulties face by the common people of Hyderabad. The first-half is a bit slow but the second-half totally nailed it. Those who are interested in the history of India and the freedom struggles should try this movie.
