Plot

A soldier falls in love with a mute gypsy, who deals in dolls. His father is not in favor of this alliance and decides to get rid of her. However, the mute girl swears revenge and returns in the form of a vengeful spirit in her pursuit of justice.

Star Performances

G Muruganandam and Sukanya are the reasons why this film looks somehow presentable, even if just for the acting performances.

The duo does their best to make up for the absence of an engaging screenplay.

Analysis

Revenge dramas are very common in Indian cinema. But not the way KS Muthu Manoharan thought of, using gypsies and dolls to set the stage for vengeance. At least for this vision, as well as the decent camerawork, KS Muthu Manoharan deserves some praise for sure.

What he doesn’t deserve praise for though, is the way he went about with the story. Despite the premise looking good on paper, ‘Marapachi’ is far from being a riveting supernatural drama. The elements used to scare the audience are anything but novel, and the execution of the narrative is far from impressive. For the climax, the less said, the better.

The pace of the narrative is another cause of concern. Despite the runtime being less than 2 and a half hours long, the audiences struggle to maintain their patience with the narrative. To make matters worse, the buildup to the climax is nothing novel, and some viewers may even find it hard to maintain their patience with just the initial half itself. By the time the film ends, not many shall leave the hall singing praises of the same.

‘Marapachi’ is not completely a disaster though. Muruganandam as the lead protagonist, and Sukanya as the mute gypsy did try to make their efforts count. The bonding between the lead pair would appear convincing to some, even though the narrative doesn’t seem that way. Muruganandam could have done better, but as the lead actor, his appearance was still okay in comparison to the tomfoolery on display.

What's There?

  • Only the performances of Muruganandam and Sukanya
  • The camerawork of the film

What's Not There?

  • A decent plot ruined by choppy editing
  • Too much time taken to build up the narrative
  • Weak antagonists

Verdict

‘Marapachi’ had a nice concept for a change. The execution of the screenplay, however, ruined the experience for the viewers. Only the acting performances of Muruganandam and Sukanya somehow salvaged the film.
