Plot

Ranjan brings his pregnant wife Keerthi to a medical centre for checkup. However, Keerthi soon learns that Ranjan is planning the abortion of her unborn child. Will she manage to save her child before it is too late?

Star Performances

The simplistic narrative adopted by Siddu Poornachandra is both impressive and wonderful.

The actors have done a great job. However, Bhavani Prakash and Rohith R Rangaswamy steal the show with their impressive performances.

Analysis

Female foeticide is a serious cause of concern. Despite several measures taken by the government, there are people in India who continue to practice it, and there are also people who will do it shamelessly for extra few bucks.

‘Tharini’ revolves around one such case. The film opens with a woman ready to sacrifice her granddaughter. The scene then changes to a woman, who visits a clinic with her husband under the pretext of a checkup. However, it turns out that the husband is nothing different from the woman we saw in the beginning.

‘Tharini’ is not something out of the blue, but the director sticks to a simple narrative, which is surprisingly engaging. The focus is on the main issue for most of the time, which is great.

The visuals, as well as the editing, are also decent. The only major problem is the conclusion, which feels rushed, and not upto the mark. Despite the best efforts, you don’t feel connected with the entire narrative in many places.

However, the acting performances in the movie try to make up for the mess left behind. Mamatha Rahuth does a splendid job. So is Rohith R Rangaswamy as the fickle minded, regressive husband, who hates the very idea of a girl child. However, it is Bhavani Prakash, who steals the show as the opportunistic gynecologist. She proves that sometimes, it is the woman who is the biggest enemy of another woman.

Verdict

‘Tharini’ is a social drama that makes a surprisingly good impact. The narrative is nothing out of the blue, but the performances more than make up for it. Bhavani Prakash is the standout performer in this social drama. Overall, this movie is good for a one time watch!
