Plot

Pippa follows the journey of Captain Balram Singh Mehta and his siblings, Radha Mehta and Major Ram Mehta. Balram Singh Mehta is a young officer in the 45^th regiment of Cavalry, which has tank PT-76, aka Pippa. The tank is designed to float over water, just like Pippa (ghee). Balram is known for being rebellious, not following any rules, and taking risks without listening to his seniors. This movie captures the journey of the 1971 Indo-Pak war and the pivotal role of Balram Singh Mehta. While his brother Ram Mehta and sister Radha Mehta are given equal opportunities to contribute, Balram is given a desk job due to his disciplinary issues. Things take a worse turn when Major Ram Mehta is captured and now Balram has to step in, not only to save his brother but also Bengali refugees in India.

Star Performances

The best performance is delivered by the three Mehta siblings, featuring Ishaan Khatter as Captain Balram Mehta, Mrunal Thakur as Radha Mehta, and Priyanshu as Major Ram. The portrayal of their characters, with extreme courage and determination, adds to the beauty of the movie. Their expressions, dialogue delivery, and expressions add to the element of patriotism in Pippa. Their casting in this film helped save the day.

Analysis

Pippa seems to be Raj Shankar Menon’s attempt at bringing attention to the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. It promotes camaraderie between India and Bangladesh and how Indian soldiers laid their lives to protect the people. The different perspectives of this war are depicted by the three Mehta siblings, the main focus being on Balaram, aka Ishaan Khatter. Initially, Balaram is restricted from giving any significant contributions, but the scene turns around when his brother is captured.

The film is widely appreciated for its accurate depiction of the war. It does falter when it comes to visual effects, any thriller-packed movie relies heavily on them, but not this one. Also, the casting of Ishaan Khatter as Balaram is criticized by the audience. His role required depth and strong expressions, which he failed to deliver as a novice actor. It is also observed that such an extraordinary script is ruined by mediocre dialogues. Simply put, this film has its own set of merits and flaws balanced out when it comes to the screen.
