Plot

V.S Kamath is an old man that lives in his house in Mumbai all alone. One day, his house is robbed by a strange man. Kamath is very upset by the robbery and the comments that the police officers pass on the fact that he lives all alone. In his upset state, he resolves to make friends. This prompts him to set out to socialise and make awkward conversation with random strangers.

He happens to run into a woman named Parkash Handa, a loud, bold Punjabi woman. Intrigues by her, he follows her to the police station where he finds out that she too has been robbed. This similarity gives the two an oppurtunity to bond, and they become eccentric friends. They begin to spend time with each other, going on adventures and trying new things and having fun together. They begin to enjoy each other's company.

Parallely, we see another man, a tailor named Nanhe Gupta, who begins to rob houses as a means to pay back his debt. When his path unexpectedly crosses with Kamath and Handa, all three of their lives get turned upside down.

Star Performance

The leads of this film are Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta. Jackie Shroff plays the role of Kamath, a loner who is by no means as innocent as he looks. Jackie Shroff is funny, full of heart and so very endearing in his role, and every bit as cool as he was in his youth. Neena Gupta has come into her role like a pro and plays it with effortless ease. Her role is of the foul-mouthed and loud Parkash Kamath. Neena Gupta, although a bit surprising, seems perfect for the role.

There is also notably great chemistry between Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta, which makes their on-screen presence a lot more fun to watch.

Abhishek Chauhan shines in his role as Nanhe, the helpless tailor. Another commendable performance is Monika Panwar, the vivacious beggar who captures Nanhe's heart. The surprising cameo by Rakhi Sawant Rakhi Sawant, the well-known drama queen of the In >> Read More... adds a touch of humor.

Analysis

Mast Mein Rehne Ka is heartwarmingly hilarious. The film combines comedy with emotion, forgiveness, redemption and lessons about life in a seamless manner.

The film is set in Mumbai, the fast-paced city that never stops for anybody. Mumbai is the perfect landscape for a story like this, which shows us the lives of a group of every different people with very different challeneges and how each of them find their own unique ways to fight their problems and find a way to survive.

On the one hand, we see Kamath, who has chosen a path of solitude. One the other hand, we have Parkash, who finds joy and energy despite her age and chooses to enjoy her life. We also see Nanhe, who is weighed down by debt and poor choices. A beautiful story comes out of the way that these three people meet, teaching each other about life and also learning themselves. The film brings in unique perspectives in a humorous and light-hearted way.

There are a lot of subtle but deep narratives laced throughout the plot. We see the struggle of the poor in a big city, the idea that not even those free of financial woes are free of loneliness, the despair of the aged, the way that humans seem to find bonds and connections no matter hwo different their backgrounds may be. There are also beautiful dialogues, like Kamath comparing that life is like a wave crashing into the shore again and again but to no avail as nobody ever notices it.

At it's core, the film and its characters are eccentric, quirky and a little bit silly. They will make you laugh at every moment. This makes the film very engaging and interesting to watch.

There are some faults within the film, such as its speed in the first half or the episodic and abrupt nature of the scenes, but all these faults are almost negligibale thanks to the writing and the story.

What's There?

  • The film has great dialogues, writing and a wonderful message.
  • The acting by the cast adds to the brilliance of the film.

What's Not There?

  • The flow of the story could have been more smooth.

Verdict

Mast Mein Rehne Ka is a film that will make you laugh, cry, and reflect all at once. With a diverse group of characters and a hilariously engaging plot, this film is one that you should definitely not miss.
