An Indian Immigrant's son, Krishna Gopal, or what he adopted as his American counter name "Kris", couldn't relate to the Indian traditions and cultures followed by his family. He felt forced to follow these traditions. So, he is excited to move out to the college, away from the Indian diaspora. Later he finds out that his roommates are all Indians and even the girl he develops feelings for is an Indian girl. What will he do? Will he accept his tradition and culture? How will he tackle this situation? The film answers these questions as the story moves forward.

Star Performances

Deep did a decent job while portraying 'Kris'. Purva as 'Nina', played her role very convincingly. The casting of all the roommates was up to the mark. Ronobir as 'Jagjit', Rizwan as 'Salim', and Kal as 'Ajay', all did a great job in representing the varied Indian culture and religious diversity in India. Also, their chemistry is one of the positive aspects of the film. The rest of the cast played their characters, as they were supposed to be played.

Analysis

"American Desi" is a story of an American son of Indian Immigrants. The director tried to depict Indian culture through little banters and jokes on Indian rituals, ordinarily followed in most Indian households. To represent Indian culture comically is, indeed, a bold step, but most of the jokes in the film, aren't funny and feel out of place. The research for the film felt poor, like once, in the movie, they played, the 'Om Jay Jagdish' song, while the Indian mother was blessing her son before leaving for college. The screenplay of this film doesn't have anything different for the audience; it is a simple story with a happy ending. The chemistry between the characters felt good, and this made the movie intriguing. The music used in the film is fine and the use of Hindi movie songs did support the theme of the film. Every Character in the film played his part as per the story's demand. When all the roommates are there in a scene, it indeed, delivers to the audience. The most important thing for a comedy movie is the jokes used in the film. In this film, some jokes felt great, while most of the jokes failed to deliver and felt out of order.

What's There?

  • Friendly banters
  • Decent performances
  • The chemistry between the characters, especially the Indian roommates.
  • Light, funny love story

What's Not There?

  • Poor Depiction of Indian Culture
  • With a lack of objective, the story felt freely flowing
  • Most of the jokes didn't land
  • Certain characters felt extras

Verdict

It is a simple story made with heartfelt emotions. One will get nostalgic about one's college days and the great times spent with friends, after watching this film. If you are looking for a funny teen college comedy and romance without spending much of your brain, try it.
