The Finishers (original title- De toutes nos forces) is a 2013 French sports drama film, written jointly by Neils Tavernier and Laurent Bertoni and directed by Neils Tavernier. The film is produced by Philip Boeffard and Cristophe Rossignol. The film has star-studded casts. Jacques Gamblin as Paul Amblard, Alexandra Lamy as Claire Amblard, Fabien Heraud as Julien Amblard, Sophie de Furst as Sophie Amblard, Pablo Pauly as Yohan. The rest of the cast includes Christelle Cornil, Fred Epaud, Sandra Leclercq, Sonia Jacob, Laura Lardeux, Yvette Petit, Nicholas Payan, and others. Baroi Johannsson composed the music. Laurent Machuel is the cinematographer. The editor is Yann Malcor.

Plot

Paul Amblard wished to have a son as a second child. It got fulfilled by the birth of Julien.  But after finding out about his disability, Paul refused to deal with his handicap and took refuge in his job. He was a cable car repairer and a volunteer firefighter. The whole duty of taking care of Julien fell upon his wife, Claire. He gradually develops into a stubborn teenager. At 17, he becomes aware of a life of adventures and that he is unable to lead that life owing to his disability. He also learns that his father was a good athlete and once participated in an ironman triathlon race. Julien started developing this dream of participating in that race with his father. Paul, who is now old and is discouraged by life, rejects his son’s proposal. However, Julien gradually convinces Paul and he starts training again. The whole Amblard family comes together with the excuse of this race. Although Claire vehemently opposes this decision, a hint of togetherness appears between father and son. On the race day, Julien suffers an injury halfway through while his father collapses during the marathon leg. Yet, they continue the race with utmost determination and will and ultimately finish it before the cutoff time.

Star performance

All the actors were excellent in their respective characters. Fabien was outstanding in his role of Julien. He displayed various emotions like helplessness, anxiety, and determination through his expressions. It was only possible with the help of the supporting lead Jacques. The way he portrayed the character of Paul was amazing. He perfectly brought out the emotions of a father through his acting.

Analysis

This movie is based on a true story. It speaks of the dreams of a boy who uses a wheelchair. To live his dreams, he challenges his father to compete in the race. A whole family comes together to witness this incredible journey. Jacques Gamblin and the rest of the cast contributed to this tearjerking masterpiece. The plotline of the film is impressive and sentimental. The emotional scenes at the end made all the audiences cry. These scenes are executed well by the actors who made this story credible. The movie depicts the beauty of the French countryside in contrary to the characters’ lives. The cinematographer captured this in the best way possible. The soundtracks written by Baroi Johannsson are suitable for the film. The scriptwriter maintained the same pace throughout the film. The direction is on point, making it a wonderful film. It portrays the family issues of a disabled person and the agony that he goes through both physically and mentally. The movie also perfectly portrays a father-son relationship.

What’s there?

  • Jacques excellent performance
