Plot
Sword of Trust is a comedic drama of trends and histories intersecting in and around a pawn shop in Birmingham, Alabama. Mel, a grim-witted owner, is visited by two new clients, Cynthia and Mary. The couple recently arrived in Birmingham to take care of business after the death of Cynthia’s grandfather. There Cynthia takes over a Civil War sword left by the deceased grandfather. It gets passed down from generation to generation. It also carried a report claiming that the South won the war. Cynthia and Mary decide to sell that sword, and they try it first to Mel. But they eventually reject his low offer. Soon, Mel’s young assistant, Nathaniel, a YouTube addict and a consumer of the kooky conspiracy theories found on the internet, discovers an online group of Civil Southerners. They insist that the South won the Civil War and are ready to pay massively for artifacts like swords. The group is anxious to get their hands on the coveted sword. Cynthia, Mary, and Mel, with Nathaniel’s help, team up to sell the sword to that group but get pulled into a violent network of hatred. Will they be able to get out of this dangerous situation? Who are these enthusiastic conspiracy theorists? Why are they eager to get the sword?
Star Performance:
Marc Maron’s approach to Mel’s tragic history and the consequences he lives with give the story more heart than the anticipation expected. That sincerity helps sell the sillier aspects of the story, although it might seem a bit confusing. Though the most part, it’s an advantage. Well, for those familiar with Marc Maron, he runs a podcast called WTF with Marc Maron, which should be a bit of a giveaway.
Analysis:
The movie starts as a kind of comedic before entering into relationship territory. The director emphasizes our relationship with truth and how that shows the way we connect with people. It is a perfectly formed, witty, indie comedy that uses an outrageous situation to highlight some essential truths and necessary falsehoods – about how we live with and love each other. That’s what the director Lynn Shelton was best. He and the cast take this goofy premise and turn it into a surprisingly clever, funny story filled with unique characters that challenge our assumptions while also having something to say about this modern life. It's modish and original.
