Plot
The movie opens in the year 1952, we see a 10-year-old girl Aretha Franklin, who likes to sing, lives with her divorcee father Clarence LaVaughn Franklin and her siblings Cecil, Erma, and Carolyn. Mr. Clarence LaVaughn Franklin is a pastor in a church in Detroit. Aretha’s father often held parties at their house and has Aretha sings there whereas her mother, Barbara always encourages her independence for doing other activities. Then, one day Aretha got the news that her mother has passed out which traumatised her to the level that she desists from speaking and singing for weeks. Until one day when her father demands her to sing in the church. The scene shifts to seven years later, where we see Aretha is a mother of two teen boys but she refuses to name their father. What is the secret that Aretha’s life took a huge turn? The rest of the stories unravel the secrets with a musical touch.
Star Performance
Jennifer Hudson delivers an Oscar winning performance as Aretha Franklin. She was flawless encompasses her from Mannerisms to talk and walk. The rest of the cast has also gone well along the movie. The details in period costumes, vintage hairdos, against the background of changing times adds to the movie’s gratification.Â
Analysis
This film has plenty of intense scenes that are grounded in reality. Like they are happening in real life not just in a film without any over drama. You can find yourself crying quite often during the movie. The first twenty minutes of the movie is undoubtedly engaging but then it became somewhat dull. Also, the soundtrack was not good enough to make up for the plot. As it turns out, it is a shady and gloomy film that addresses a lot of traumas that someone has carried throughout her life. The film has balanced well between humour, music and depicting the reality of Aretha’s life. Overall, it is a feel-good movie, that will make you will dance, sing, clap, and even get a bit emotional throughout the film.
