Occupation Movie Review

Plot

The film is set in the backdrop of a rural town in Australia. Matt Simmons, played by Dan Ewing, and his girlfriend Amelia, played by Stephanie Jacobsen, get by in life working as a construction worker and a waitress, respectively. Matt also plays football but is at odds with his team’s captain Jackson, played by Charles Terrier. On one fine day, when the entire city is gathered at the stadium to watch a football match, spaceships appear out of nowhere and start wreaking havoc. The stadium and the town suffered heavy damage from the spaceships’ attacks, and thus, the townsfolk escape into the forest. The surviving townsfolk make a camp in the woods, gather necessary supplies and weapons, and patrol the area to protect themselves from the aliens. The aliens are armored bi-pedals with insect-like structures. The film follows the survivors’ journey as they survive and eventually fight against their invaders.  

Star Performance

The entire star cast performs well in their respective roles. The film highlights the collective efforts of the cast. The cast does an exceptional job of playing a close-knit group struggling to survive.

Analysis

The film is a well-executed Australian take on the space invaders genre. It is a good film considering it is made by a small production with limited funds.

What’s There?

• The film follows an alien invasion
• The film depicts stories of love, struggle, parenthood, and sacrifice
• The film has a lot of action sequences

What’s Not There?

• The budget constraints are evident in the action scenes.
• The plot moves slowly in the middle of the film, depicting how the survivors spent a year under occupation. While at other times, the plot line is very fast-paced.

Verdict

Overall, “Occupation” is a good alien invasion film portraying an Australian view of the genre. The cast is strong, and performs well. The alien’s armor helps the aliens look stronger and more formidable. The editing and special effects team also did very well. So, “Occupation” would be a good match for alien invasion and science-fiction enthusiasts.
