Plot

The film’s protagonists are Will, played by Ben Foster, and Tom, played by Thomasin McKenzie, a father-daughter duo living a peaceful life in the lap of nature in a public park in Portland, Oregon. They lead a harmonious life isolated from the rest of the world. They get nearly everything they need from the forest. Their lives are thrown into disarray after a passerby spots Tom and makes a report to the authorities. The authorities take Will and Tom for questioning. Will is taken for examintion and testing while Tom gets placed in a center for minor girls. The duo that had lived a harmonious life in sync, almost as if they were a single entity, gets forced apart. The film follows the story of Will and Tom, about how they struggled with the authorities and the peculiarities of the world they had lived in isolated from. The film is a beautiful story about how the father and daughter eventually come to accept the world on their terms since Will displayed a strong aversion to the world. In contrast, Tom is curious about the world but does not want to be apart from her father.

Star Performance

Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie give stellar performances as Will and Tom, respectively. They are completely in harmony with their characters and would lead anyone to believe that they are father and daughter. They performed the roles of people who showed their lives in isolation perfectly.

Analysis

Debra Granik tells the story in a heartwarming, natural tone without extreme twists and turns. She lets the story unfold naturally. The actors also perform their roles well. The film is a drama without excessive and overt storytelling, and it feels like the events unfold in their natural sequence in front of the viewers.

What’s There?

  • Stellar performances by the protagonists Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie
  • The story unfolds naturally, with no overt dramatic scenes.
  • A heartwarming story of a father and daughter and how they navigate their lives and their relationship as the world around them changes drastically.

What’s Not There?

  • The public authorities are portrayed in a slightly negative light as if they are cruel, but they just step in to help the protagonists. The teenage daughter had never been to school; in such a case, public authorities’ help is imperative.

Verdict

The film “Leave No Trace” is a heartwarming story of the bond between a parent and child and how a parent would do everything in their power for their child’s happiness. The actors’ and the director’s skills are top-notch and help make this film a masterpiece. “Leave No Trace” is the perfect heartwarming drama for the viewers’ next movie night.
